A system for processing authentication mark (20) requests made in connection with an on-line purchase prepares an authentication mark database (30, 330) for those items whose request flag is set when the purchaser submits the on-line purchase (310). The request flag for a particular item is set when the purchaser provides a specified input (530), by either checking off (40, 70) a box next to the item or dragging and dropping a toolbar element onto an image (60) of the item. The database includes identifying data about the items having an authentication mark and descriptive data about each authentication mark (650) so that these items can be authenticated at a later time using the database (760).
