To doff full cross wound bobbins and replace them with empty bobbin sleeves, at the winding stations of an automatic bobbin winder, the cop (11) is exchanged before the bobbin (15) is replaced by an empty sleeve (29), when the bobbin is wound by a given amount of yarn. The cop (11) is exchanged before the bobbin (15) is doffed, when the amount of yarn on the cop (11) falls below a given value. The cop (11) is exchanged before the signal is generated to activate the doffer (30). An Independent claim is included for an automatic bobbin winder with a number of winding stations, with a system (19,44) to measure the yarn length remaining on the cop (11) on doffing. The monitor signals are evaluated at a signal processing station (19,33), to change the cop (11) before bobbin (15) doffing if there is an insufficient amount of yarn left. Preferred Features: A detector (44) monitors the yarn length remaining on the cop (11) at the winding stations, and is connected to the winding station control (19). The control (19) can compute the remaining yarn at the cop (11) for winding on a bobbin. The winding station control (19) is linked to the central bobbin winder control (32) and doffer control (33) by a machine bus (31).
