The sealing device has a pair of cooperating housing halves (11,21) with a separation plane perpendicular to the cable axis, brought together for compression of a sealing element (35) fitted around the outside of the cable. The outer contour of the assembled housing halves corresponds to the contour of the cable opening, each housing half having a radially projecting flange (12,22) abutting the switch cabinet wall around the edge of the cable opening.
