The polymer is distributed from the inlet (21) to pass through a curved filtration band (5) and leave through connecting channels (35) at the outlet (33). The filtration band (5) consists of a fine wire mesh (201) supported on a continuous coarse mesh (5a). The fine mesh (201) is removed (71) after use and the coarse mesh (5a) cleaned (77,83) and recirculated. The band (5) is moved forward intermittently by a clamp (57) and sealed against leakage on entry and exit by cool zones (39,41).
