PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively suppress lowering of image quality caused by flaws in a transmission original without losing a much light emitted from a light source. SOLUTION: Light, irradiated from a light source 24 to the outside of a mirror box 26 for main illumination, is made incident to a mirror box 46. The mirror box 46 irradiates a photographic film F with light incident from the light source part 24 as subordinate illumination light. This subordinate illumination light becomes a beam flux having an optical axis inclined to an optical flux L1 of main illumination light along with a main scanning direction. Thus, even when the main illumination light emitted from a light diffusing plate 26B is refracted with flaws on the photographic film F supported at a reading position R, one part of subordinate illumination light can be made incident to a lens unit 56 in place of one part of main illumination light, which is not incident to the lens unit 56.
