Stay bars(9) which stand vertically on the standing surface(11) when in use are positioned below the edge(8) of the flight of stairs. Clamping elements which keep the stay bars in the in-use position are adjustable in the longitudinal direction and have a protruding section(15) upon which is mounted a clamping spindle(16) which when fitted to the stay bar locates beneath and clamps against the underside(12) of the stair structure. The rail elements are fastened to the stay bars.
