Assigning fixed addresses for software addressed elements in fiber channel initialization loop with selected address stored in permanent memory until command to delete is received

Procedure is used to determine (200) whether the address is stored in ROM, and if it is, the address is used (206) as a hardware address during a fiber channel loop initialization. When the address is stored in a temporary memory the address is selected (202) from a loop initialization software frame and stored in a permanent memory. A software addressed element is given an address in permanent memory when it is first detected by the system. After this when it is detected subsequently it is treated as if it had a hardware address.
