A method and apparatus for setting valve clearances on overhead camshaft internal combustion engines is described. An elongate, removable shim element (82) is provided of rectangular section and formed with a groove (94) extending longitudinally thereof. The shim element (82) is slidably received in a recess (88) provided in a side wall of a cam-follower body (84). The valve clearance between a compression surface (86) of the cam-follower body (84) and a camshaft lobe can be adjusted by replacing the shim element (82). The shim element (82) can be replaced with stock items of varying thickness to facilitate rapid and efficient adjustment of the valve clearance. Much of the labour and time involved in adjusting the valve clearance using conventional methods is thereby eliminated as the camshaft(s) and drive gear do not need to be removed.
