A method for scrambling a polarization of light signals, comprising the steps of scrambling the polarization of a light signal with a scrambling frequency, and combining the polarization scrambled light signal to form a wavelength division multipl4xed light signal. The step of scrambling comprises scrambling the polarization of a plurality of light signals at the same scrambled frequency, and the step of combining comprises combining the plurality of polarization scrambled light signals to form a wavelength division multiplexed light signal. Each of the plurality of light signals has a different frequency, and respective light signals are defined as being adjacent when the frequencies of the respective light signals are adjacent to each other in a frequency spectrum without the frequency of a different light signal therebetween. Before the polarization of the plurality of light signals is scrambled, the polarization of each light signal is different from the polarization of light signals adjacent to the respective light signal. Scrambling supresses non-linear optical effects during transmission, such as four wave mixing and cross-phase modulation. |
