<p>A tamper-proof locking mechanism for a vehicular engine compartment, the compartment having a (a) hood closure member (12) with a striker (18) secured thereto; (b) a latch mechanism (26) having a movable latch (64,68) for catching and holding the striker (18); (c) a bracket (21) secured or connected within the compartment having (i) walls (22a-22d) secured to the latch mechanism, (ii) a saddle (30) with spaced walls (31,32) defining a track; and (d) a lock (41) having a housing (42) provided with (i) a tumbler body (43) slidable in and along the track (31,32) and nestable on the saddle for being secured in an operative position, (ii) housing flanges (44,45) that overlap the edges of both of the spaced saddle walls (31,32), contacting the edges of the side walls to ride thereon and stabilize the body in the track (31,32) and prevent the tumbler body (43) from being pulled out or pushed in, and (iii) a pair of ears (46,47) extending from the body (43) to fit flush with the interior of the respective track walls (31,32) and prevent twisting of the body therein.</p> |
