PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter medium which has a function to adsorb and remove various kinds of environmental pollutants and can be extensively used in environments such as water, soil and the atmospheric air and at the same time, can recover a useful substance in the sea water or the like by thermally treating and fixing a modifier of a micro-pore diameter and adsorptivity in the micro-pores of a carbide obtained by thermally treating wood. SOLUTION: This filter medium absorbs environmental pollutants or a useful substance into the micro-pores of the carbide which is obtained by thermally treating wood. In this case, a modifier which modifies the micro-pore diameter and adsorptivity is thermally treated and fixed in the pores. For the modifier, one or two kinds or more selected from the group of a carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC), an alginic acid, agar-agar and chitosan are used, and the thermal treatment temperature for fixing is set within the range of 200-500 deg.C. Since the modifier for modifying the pore diameter and the adsorbing properties is fixed in the pores of charcoal or the like after thermal treatment, it is possible to set an optimal pore diameter in accordance with the kind of the environmental pollutant and at the same time, control the adsorbing properties in the pores depending upon the nature of the modifier.
