PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To unerringly detect incorrectly collated signature by recognizing image patterns, which are obtained by photographing characters, figures, patterns, photographs and other shapes printed on the pages of the signatures as they are with a CCD camera and processing framed images on a displaying surface, on which the photographed images are displayed. SOLUTION: In this method, when signatures 3 are fed from a plurality of laminating parts to a gathering machine 1 for gathering according to page, at least some part of the printed page of each signature 3 is photographed with a CCD camera 7 so as to display it on a displaying surface 9 for observation. On the other hand, the photographed image displayed on the displaying surface 9 is partitioned by placing a certain frame thereon so as to process the framed image in order to obtain an image pattern. By recognizing each image pattern, an incorrect collating is detected.
