PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a highly reliable stabilized print performance by providing a cap member covering the recording face of a recording head mounted on a carriage with means for cleaning the surface facing the recording head thereby sustaining the cap member and the recording head constantly in correct contact state. SOLUTION: When a recording head 6 is located at home position, a recovery unit 17 brings the recording head 6 to faces the recovery unit 17. A single cap member 18 is arranged on the face of the recovery unit body 40 facing the recording head 6. A carriage 14 carried on a carried shaft 15 is mounted with a cap cleaner blade 19, i.e., means for wiping off the surface of the cap member 18, arranged to move in the direction receding from the cap member 18 through a approach/recede mechanism 30. When cleaning is performed, the blade 19 is moved to abut against the surface part of the cap member 18 and when cleaning is not performed, the blade 19 is moved to a waiting position separated from the cap member 18.
