PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce high-mol.-wt. polyaspartic acid under industrially suitable conditions by subjecting maleamic acid or a reaction product of maleic anhydride and ammonia to hydrogen transfer polymerization in the presence of a vinyl polymerization inhibitor and a basic catalyst. SOLUTION: A compound represented by ROMe (wherein R is alkyl; and Me is lithium, sodium or potassium) or an alkoxide represented by the formula (wherein R2 is alkyl; and Me is lithium, sodium or potassium) is preferable as the catalyst. Based on 100 pts.wt. maleamic acid or reaction product of maleic anhydride and ammonia, the catalyst is used preferably in an amount of 0.001-100 pts.wt.; and the polymerization inhibitor, usually in an amount of 0.001-5 pts.wt. The reaction can be conducted in the presence or absence of a solvent. The reaction is conducted preferably at -30 deg.C to 200 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere under a reduced, normal or increased pressure for 1 min to 100 hr.
