摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the ventilation resistance of an exhaust gas and to improve the output of an engine by chamfering the corners of a flat plate and a corrugated plate constituting the front end surface in a metallic carrier and the corner part of the front end surface in a ceramic carrier toward the upstream side of the honeycomb-structured metallic carrier or ceramic carrier. SOLUTION: The flat plate is formed by slitting a flat plate coil by a cutting roller. The corner part of the flat plate is ground and chamfered by a rotary grinding stone. Part of the chamfered flat plate 9 is left as it is and another part is corrugated to form the corrugated plate 12, combined with the chamfered flat plate 9 ad spirally wound to form the honeycomb structured metallic carrier 13. The ceramic carrier 15 composed of an unsintered cordierite based ceramic is dipped into water with the front end surface 16 directed downward or a prescribed quantity of water is sprayed toward the front end surface 16 from the under side to wet and dissolve the corner part of the front end surface 16 to roundly chamfer it. The chamfered ceramic is sintered at 1400 deg.C to obtain the chamfered ceramic carrier.
