PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and economically perform the antifouling of a filtration membrane surface, in a membrane separation device where suction filtration is carried out intermittently. SOLUTION: In a membrane separation device which is provided with a treating tank 1 into which raw water is supplied, a filtration membrane module 2 dipped to the raw water in the treating tank 1, and in which suction with the suction pump 4 is carried out intermittently, pressure applied to the inside of the filtration membrane module 2 when stopping the suction is adjusted to atmospheric pressure or more. Specifically, for instance, the atmospheric pressure is applied to the inside of the filtration membrane module 2 by opening a part of the suction pipe 3 between the filtration membrane module 2 and the suction pump 4.
