PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack shaft for steering mechanism and manufacturing method thereof capable of ensuring a large steering angle in spite of a compact structure. SOLUTION: After a screw groove Mg is formed over the overall length of a rack shaft, part of the screw groove Mg is removed to form a rack tooth Mt, thereby ensuring the precision of the screw groove adjacent to the rack tooth Mt. It is thus possible to restrain the construction of a steering mechanism compact without generating operating failure even if a ball nut is engaged up to the internal end of the screw groove Mg.
