PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating a coke oven extending the life of the coke oven through reducing extrusion lateral pressure during coke extrusion, thereby reducing the load on the wall of the coke oven. SOLUTION: This method of operating a coke oven for coke production through smoothly extruding coke from a coke oven carbonizing chamber comprises the following practice: the wall side coke shrinkage, carbon add-on thickness and oven wall displacement are determined when coke is extruded, and a value calculated by subtracting both the carbon add-on thickness and wall displacement from the above wall side coke shrinkage is decided as an oven wall coke gap, the minimum value of the gap is set in advance, and coke oven operating conditions are selected so that the above-mentioned oven wall coke gap is greater than the minimum value thereof.
