PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-absorbent material which is excellent in water absorption capacity, salt resistance, low water solubility, water absorption rate, gel strengths, etc., has a high biodegradabilty and can be obtained from a low-cost resin without requiring a complicated process by using a resin obtained by reacting a polyamino acid with a polysaccharide and a crosslinker. SOLUTION: Polyaspatic acid and its salt are preferable examples of the polyamino acid. Preferably, the mol.wt. of the polyamino acid is 3,000 or higher. The polysaccharide is used usually in an amount of 0.1-1,000 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. polyamino acid. The amount of the crosslinker used is usually 0.05-20 wt.% of a composition comprising the polyamino acid and the polysaccharide. A mixture of the polyamino acid and the polysaccharide or a crosslinking product of the polyamino acid and the polysaccharide is dissolved or suspended in water and then irradiated with a radiation to be crosslinked. The vicinity of the surface of the crosslinking product may further be crosslinked.
