PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily measure the surface position in a melting furnace without using an encoder by counting the number of pulses outputted to a stepping motor for moving a detector, and computing the downward moving quantity of the detector. SOLUTION: The level detector 12 is set at a reference position T. The stepping motor is driven in a motor control section to lower the detector 12 toward the surface of the fused glass G. When the detector 12 comes into contact with the surface of the fused glass G, the motor control section outputs a reset signal to a computing section. The moving quantity S of the detector 12 is computed in accordance with the total pulses outputted to the stepping motor until the level detector 12 comes into contact with the surface of the fused glass G from the reference position. The computing section subtracts the computed moving quantity S from the reference position T and obtains the surface position L of the fused glass G. The result of the computation is displayed on a display device and the surface position of the fused glass G is checked. When the detector 12 comes into contact with the surface of the fused glass, the motor control section outputs the signal of a reverse direction to cause the retreat of the detector 12.
