PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an exhaust gas from flowing into an intake pipe in stopping of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When the off operation of an ignition switch is performed (step 100), an ECU detects (step 102) the positions of intake valves of a first to fourth cylinders. The ECU continuously supplies exciting current to a fist electromagnetic coil, corresponding to the full closed intake valve to hold the intake valve in the full closed state. The ECU makes the intake valve which is not fully closed in the off operation of the ignition switch into the full closed state (step 110). When the specified time T1 passes from the off operation of the ignition switch, the ECU stops the supply of exciting current to the first electromagnetic coil, corresponding to the intake valve to half open the intake valve.
