PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound usable as a photoinitiator for polymerization of a cationically polymerizable material. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of the formula [R1-I-R2]+X- [X- is a complex metal salt or the like; R1 is a group of formula I (C is a 6-14C monovalent aromatic hydrocarbon or the like; (a) is 1-3; b and c are each 0-2); D is a group of formula II [x and y are each 0 or 1; R3 is a 1-40C bivalent hydrocarbon (interrupted with O or the like); R4 is a 1-40C monovalent alkyl radical or the like]; E is O-R5 [R5 is a 1-18C monvalent hydrocarbon (interrupted with O]; F is R6 [R6 is a 1-18C monovalent hydrocarbon (interrupted with O]; R2 is a group of formula III (d and e are each 0-2)], e.g. a compound of formula IV. The compound of the formula [R1-I-R2]+X- is obtained, for example, by reacting an iodonium salt containing a hydroxyl group of the formula [R1-I-R2]+X- R1 is a group of formula V [D' is (O)x-(R3)y-OH]} with a carboxylic acid (halogenide), carboxylic anhydride and/or carbonate.
