PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a priming coat agent for paintings which shows excellent adhesive properties and causes no running of an applied pigment or no incompatibility with the pigment and further, shows outstanding color development properties in an oil painting. SOLUTION: This first coat agent for paintings contains titanium oxide, aluminum silicate, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, pulverized mica, methyl cellulose, water and a surfactant as pigment paste components. In addition, an acrylic emulsion, alkyl cellosolve and a defoaming agent are used as acrylic vehicle components. For oil vehicle components, a treated dry oil, turpentine oil, finely powdered silica and a surfactant are used. For an assistant, a defoaming agent is used.
