PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a polyarylate which has a high molecular weight, contains a less amount of a remaining polymerization catalyst and is excellent in mechanical and electrical characteristics. SOLUTION: The process comprises the following two steps: [I] a step of synthesizing a polyarylate by subjecting a dibasic aromatic carboxylic acid halide and a dihydric phenol to interfacial polymerization by using as the polymerization catalyst a quaternary ammonium salt of the formula: C4H9 C4H9-N+-R1 X- (1) C4H9 (wherein R1 is an n-butyl or benzyl group, and X is a halogen atom of Cl, Br or I, OH or HSO3), [II] a step of heating the resultant polyarylate under the conditions of a heating temperature [t( deg.C)] and a heating time [T (hour)] which satisfy the expression: 2.4×104×exp(-0.071×t)<=T<=1.5×104×exp(-0.04×t) (wherein t ranges in 100<=t<=165).
