PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To markedly improve conversion ratio even under conditions of relatively low temp. and low pressure by carrying out the conversion in the presence of a nitrogen containing organometallic compound wherein the metal is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. SOLUTION: The conversion of hexagonal boron nitride to cubic boron nitride is carried out in the presence of at least one selected from nitrogen-containing organometallic compounds of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. It is preferable that the amount of the nitrogen containing organometallic compound added is not less than 2 parts expressed in terms of total atomic number of the metal element constituting the nitrogen-containing organometallic compound wherein metal is alkali metal or alkaline earth metal per 100 parts of molecular number of the hexagonal boron nitride. The nitrogen-containing organometallic compound preferably has at least one functional group selected from acetyl group or aromatic substituents. As the nitrogen containing organometallic compound, LiNHPh, LiNHC10H7, LiNMe (Me is methyl group) or the like is cited.
