PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation method of a low-viscosity sodium carboxymethylcellulose which has non-Newtonian fluid properties. SOLUTION: In a preparation method of a low-viscosity sodium carboxymethylcellulose by reacting a solid-phase sodium carboxymethylcellulose with hydrogen peroxide, the reaction is initiated with the pH of the reaction system below 7.0. An alkali is then added in the course of the reaction to raise the pH to 7.0 or more and the reaction is continued.
