PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily measure a gap between a platen and a print head by a method wherein the print head is sequentially opposed to a plurality of plane faces and a clearance-gauge is inserted into the gaps between the plane faces and print head. SOLUTION: A platen 15 has a plurality of plane faces 25, 26 which are respectively provided to an upstream side region and a downstream side region in a non-printing region in the paper conveying direction. Recess sections 27, 28 are respectively formed on a downstream side of one 26 of the plane faces disposed at the upstream side in the paper conveying direction and on an upstream side of the other plane face 25 disposed at the down stream side in the paper conveying direction. As a result, it is possible to measure a gap between a platen 15 and a print head 20 in a condition that a region at a tip portion of the print head 20 is divided into the upstream side and downstream side in the paper conveying direction. As a clearance-gauge 30 can be inserted into the gap between the plane face 26 and print head 20 at the innermost portion in the inserting direction irrespective of the inclination of the print head 20 because of the formed recess sections 27, 28, the clearance-gauge 30 can be inserted from the identical direction, thereby raising the operability.
