PURPOSE: A MODEM with unified telephone function is provided to enable a user to perform a data communication through an external MODEM and the user to speak by telephone using telephone function of the external MODEM at no data communication. CONSTITUTION: A MODEM comprises a MODEM part(30) connected between telephone lines(L1,L2) and a computer system, a telephone part(40) of performing speaking by telephone, and a telephone function switch(50) of switching the telephone lines(L1,L2) according to the control of the MODEM part(30). The MODEM part(30) consists of a ring signal detector(31) for detecting a ring signal from the telephone lines(L1,L2), and a MODEM circuit part(33) connected between the telephone lines(L1,L2) and the computer system. The MODEM circuit part(33) informs a computer system that the ring signal detector(31) detects the ring signal, and interfaces data between the telephone lines and the computer system to perform a data communication. The telephone part(40) consists of a hook switch(41), a bridge diode(43), a key input part(45), and a telephone circuit part(47).
