Preparing dental prosthesis bases by the lost wax technique, by forming a plastic cap on the tooth or jawbone stump

The sacrificial cap formed on the stump (9) comprises a plastic material. A method for preparing a base for a dental prosthesis, e.g. a crown or bridge, comprises the following steps: (i) providing a polished tooth or jawbone stump; (ii) forming a tooth cap on the stump from a plastic material which will melt or evaporate when heated; (iii) removing the cap from the stump; (iv) encapsulating the cap in a heat-resistant material; (v) heating the cap so that a cavity is formed in the cap; and (vi) using the cavity to form the prosthesis base. An Independent claim is also included for the device used to prepare the base.
