PURPOSE: A process of preparing a new ascorbic acid derivative having antioxidant activity, showing a relatively high solubility to water and an organic solvent and high stability in an aqueous solution and excellent in skin absorption and thermal stability is provided which produces the title compound useful as raw material for cosmetics, medicines, foods and feeds. CONSTITUTION: The ascorbic acid derivative of formula 1 having antioxidation effect is prepared by reaction of a compound of formula 4 with polyethylene glycol of formula 5 and hydrolysis with an acid catalyst. In formula, R1 and R2 are the same or different H or (CH2CH2O)nOR3(n is an integer from 2 to 400, R3 is C1-10 lower alkyl), R4 and R5 are the same or different H, methyl or ethyl, or -(CH2)m- by binding R4 and R5(m is 4 or 5), R6 is H, benzyl or paramethoxybenzyl.
