A drive system for a domestic appliance provides first and second drive outlets (13, 14) operative at different speeds and comprises an active limb, which incorporates an electric drive motor (3) and a shaft (5) driven by said motor and coupled to the first drive outlet (13) to drive it at a selected speed. The system also includes a passive limb which incorporates a rotary component (10); the two limbs being mounted in fixed relationship to one another. A first speed reduction mechanism (11) couples the shaft (5) to the rotary component (10) of the passive limb and a second speed reduction mechanism (12) couples the said rotary component (10) to the second drive outlet (14). Conveniently, the rotary component (10) comprises a further shaft, disposed substantially parallel to the driven shaft (5) of said motor (3), and both limbs of the system are rigidly mounted to, and supported by, a common framework of support members, including an upper mounting plate (6). Both speed reduction mechanisms (11, 12) are typically belt driven, and may provide identical reductions; and the two mechanisms are mounted close to one another and to the upper mounting plate (6). <IMAGE> |
