The invention is a latch for securing a door or lid to a panel or frame. The latch includes a handle (42) having a cam surface (116), the handle is pivotally secured to a shaft (44), a pawl (48) nonrotatably secured to the shaft, a bracket (40) defining an opening (130), a sleeve (50) secured non-rotatably to the shaft and rotatably within the bracket's opening, and a spring (122) for biasing the pawl away from the bracket. Unlatching the latch is accomplished by first pivoting the handle outward, thereby engaging the pawl with the camming surface, pushing the pawl towards the bracket. The pawl is thereby disengaged, thereby allowing the handle to rotate the handle, shaft, and pawl to permit opening of the door or lid. The latch may optionally include detents (269) for securing the shaft against rotation, and/or a flat (301) on the camming surface of the handle to provide a rest position allowing a grip change during raising of the handle. |
