This invention pertains to a process for making alpha -methylenelactones and alpha -substitued hydrocarbylidene lactones. The present invention obtains high yields of alpha -methylene- gamma -butyrolactone by heating gamma -butyrolactone and formaldehyde in the presence of a base.
