A loop fabric for use as a female member of a hook and loop fastening structure, the fabric comprising a non-woven web (1) of discontinuous fibres and/or continuous filaments having a plurality of chain stitches (4) formed by stitch bonding on a first side (11) of the web, the discontinuous fibres and/or continuous filaments forming loops on a second side (12) of the web opposite the first side. The chain stitches (4) are formed by stitch bonding the web (1) and may comprise portions of the discontinuous fibres and/or continuous filaments. The stitches (4) may be formed in parallel wales (3) distributed across the width of the fabric. The stitch bonding to form the chain stitches (4) is carried out on a stitch bonding machine having piercing needles (2) provided with a hook (5). In each piercing operation the needle (2) collects the discontinuous fibres and/or continuous filaments in the hook (5) of the needle and uses the collected fibres and/or filaments to produce a chain stitch (4). The invention offers the advantage of a cheap and economical method of producing a surface fastener cloth without any textile yarn in the warp and/or weft direction. The cloth is a stitch-bonded fabric having a structure in which the stitching loops (4) are formed from the fibres of the web (1). |
