PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for inspecting status of a pipe is provided to prevent accidents by sensing the damage of the pipe due to an external shock to display the damage or generate an alarm signal. CONSTITUTION: A reference electrode(52) is buried adjacent to the pipe(50). A converter(54) converts the potential difference between potentials of the pipe and the reference electrode into constant signals. A remote terminal device(56) modulates signals applied from the converter into communication protocol. A modem(68) demodulates communication protocol from the remote terminal device into original signals. A signal converter(58) converts the demodulated signals from the modem into original signals. A potential display(62) converts the signals from the signal converter into potential difference values in the converter. A potential good/defect determinator(60) compares the potential difference values from the potential display with a predetermined value to determine abnormal status. An alarm generator(64) generates alarm sound. A numerical mapping part(66) displays the defect points of the pipe on a pipe map.
