The pump for liquids, and especially a barrel pump (1), has a fixed footplate (8) at the entry zone (7). It is fitted with openings (9,10) opposite the openings (19) in a further plate (18) which is rotated by a sleeve (13) round the pump housing (2). The rotation of the sleeve (13) opens and closes the openings (9,10) in the footplate (8), with the action of an iris diaphragm. The closure body moves on a plane at right angles to the rotor axis (25).
