In a data communication switch, process and apparatus for automatically applying the appropriate quality of service for multimedia streaming applications. This switch examines and interprets multimedia setup messages to determine the characteristics of the subsequent audio and video streams, and automatically sets up entries in the flow table that will apply the appropriate priorities to these streams.
