A distal balloon catheter takes the form of a dilatation catheter (1) while a proximal reservoir is constituted as a highly compliant control balloon (2) with a volume which is larger than the maximum required dilatation volume. The dilatation balloon (5) and the control balloon (2) are joined via capillary lines (7, 8) and a three way valve (4) carrying a sterile dilatation fluid (6). The control balloon is housed in the chamber of a pressure generation unit (3) filled with a pressure transfer medium. An Independent claim is included for a method for operating the catheter system for blood vessel dilatation. It involves prevention of micro bubble generation, and calibration of the system pressure.
