An organic EL device including an organic layer interposed between electrodes at least one of which is a transparent electrode, wherein if the total optical path length of the transparent electrode and the organic layer is t (nm), the optical path length representing the minimal value of the CIE x chromaticity coordinate or CIE y chromaticity coordinate measured according to the JIS Z 8701 is Min (nm), and the optical length representing the maximal value of the CIE x chromaticity coordinate or CIE y chromaticity coordinate is Max (nm), the total optical path length t meets one or both of the magnitudinous relations (a) and (b): Min-20nm∫t∫Min+20nm (a) and Max-20nm∫t∫Max+20nm (b).</p>
