<p>An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based very-high-bit-rate subscriber line (VDSL) communication system includes an optical ring (12) having a plurality of multiplexers (22, 24, 26, 28). An information provider (14) connected to the optical ring (12) via a first one of the multiplexers (22). The information provider (14) includes an ATM core switch (30) operable with the first one of the multiplexers (22) for transmitting data and video signals onto the optical ring (12) and for receiving data signals from the optical ring (12). Each of a plurality of central offices (16, 18, 20) is connected to the optical ring (12) via a respective one of the multiplexers (22, 24, 26, 28). Each of the central offices (16, 18, 20) includes an ATM edge switch (32, 36) operable with the respective one of the multiplexers (22, 24, 26, 28) for receiving video data and signals from the information provider via the optical ring.</p> |
