Acidic liquids are added to preserve the scraps for a period of perhaps 24 days. A separation of the filling point from the bulk storage is therefore important to prevent human access to the preservative and to minimize odors escaping into the atmosphere. Scraps are placed into a filling area (1) by lifting lid (4). Area (1) is separated from the bulk store by a spring loaded plate (3). When the lid has been closed a rod (6) is pushed down to deflect plate (3) to allow the material in area (1) to fall into the container. A catch (7) prevents the operation of rod (6) with an open lid or the opening of the lid when rod (6) is being operated. The top lid, including the mechanism, is switched between full and empty containers as these are transported to the animal feed processing plant. Different filling mechanisms, such as vane valves and screws, adapted to fulfill the basic requirements of separation, are contemplated.
