A device to be fitted on a vehicle wheel (1) in order to increase the fricti on between the wheel and the road surface during winter conditions, comprises a belt (3) that can encircle the tread (4) of the wheel (1) and be held in pla ce by means of flexible inner and outer side portions (5, 8). The inner side portion (5) is tightened on the inner side of the wheel by means of an elast ic member (7). The internal circumference of the belt (3) is at least 4 % large r, preferably 5-6 % larger than the largest circumference of the wheel (1). The belt (3) can be made substantially of a woven polyamide material. The outer side portion (8) of the device (2) can be fully covering or be provided with one or more openings, and may in addition be provided with radially extendin g straps (9) in order to facilitate fitting the device (2) to the vehicle whee l (1) or removing it therefrom. A method for such fitting without lifting the wheel (1) from the road surface is also disclosed. |
