In a centralized and a decentralized system (DE, ZE) both an asymmetrical and a symmetrical transmission method (ADSL, SDSL) can be carried out. The suitable transmission method (ADSL, SDSL) and the pertaining transmission rate (BR) are chosen and set both in the decentralized and the centralized system (DE, ZE) depending on an actual application (APP1, APP2), for example an internet or video conference application. The inventive method allows an optimum adaptation of the transmission technology to the applications (APP1, 2).
