An article having a water-repellent surface layer, wherein said layer comprises a fine particle material which has an average primary particle diameter of 1-200 nm and is scarcely soluble or insoluble in water, preferably metal oxide fine particles whose surface is substantially fluorinated; a water-repellent paint containing the fine particle material for use in forming the water-repellent surface layer; and a method of imparting water-repellency to an article by applying the paint to an article or by applying a resin for covering to an article and then spraying the fine particles onto the resin before the resin solidifies.
