The invented electrochemical cell comprises a first working electrode containing a layer of a first encapsulating material (37) in which there is embedded a first set of nano-structural elements (33), whereby one end of each nano-structural element (33) is embedded in the layer of the first encapsulating material (37) and the other end of each nano-structural element (33) is a part of the first surface of the first encapsulating material (37) layer so that this surface is electrically conductive. The electrochemical cell further comprises a counter electrode containing a layer of a second encapsulating material (38) in which there is embedded a second set of nano-structural elements (32), whereby one end of each nano-structural element (32) is embedded in the layer of the second encapsulating material (38) and the other end of each nano-structural element (32) is a part of the first surface of the second encapsulating material (38) layer so that this surface is electrically conductive and at least one electrolyte is in close contact with the electrically-conducting surfaces of both sets of the nano-structural elements (33, 32) of the working electrode and the counter electrode. |
