In a first mode fuel for diffuse combustion is supplied through a first injection nozzle 4, while in a second mode fuel for premixed combustion is supplied through a second nozzle 5. The change from one mode to the other (and vice versa) is controlled by electronic control means 1, in accordance with engine speed and/or load. The control means also controls a purge air switch portion 6, and a fuel supply portion 2, to provide air purge of the nozzle to which fuel supply has been terminated, during the mode change, and to temporarily restrict the maximum fuel flow rate to the nozzle to which the fuel supply has been initiated. These measures minimise speed variation during the mode change.
