In the present invention there is disclosed a hydrogenation process with hydrogen of an imine containing at least one group =C=N- under elevated pressure and in the presence of a homogeneous iridium catalyst being substantially soluble in reaction medium, in the presence or absence of an inert solvent and in absence of ammonium chloride, ammonium bromide or ammonium iodide and in absence of metal chloride, bromide or iodide, whereby the reaction temperature is in the range of -20 to 100 degC, hydrogen pressure is within 500 to 15 000 kPa and molar ratio of the imine to the iridium catalyst ranges from 5 000 000 do 10. The process is characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of hydrogen iodide and molar ratio of the imine to the hydrogen iodide is in the range of 5000 to 15.
