Controlling traffic queues in network switches

A network switch includes a transmit queue of packets together with an indication of the type and size of each packet. An arbitrator includes a ratio counter 22 which is incremented by the size (e.g. in bytes) of each packet of a first type (e.g. "low-loss") and decremented by a scaled size of each packet of a second type (e.g. "normal loss"), the scaling factor 25 being selected in accordance with a desired throughput ratio of the two packet types. A packet of the second type is discarded if the queue exceeds a set limit and a scaled size of the packet exceeds the net ratio count.
