The rotor (19) has markings (21) produced by removing material, e.g. with a laser, comprising lettering (23) and pictograms (22). The position, plane and depth of the material removal is determined during dynamic balancing of the rotor and serves both for identification and balancing. The balancing process follows existing practice with material removal carried out by a laser in a series of cuts of increasing depth, interspersed with measurements of the residual out-of-balance.
