PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject crosslinked copolymer, excellent in water absorption and biodegradability by crosslinking a copolymer of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acidbased monomer and a specific quantity of quinone derived from a monomer component composed of a quinone. SOLUTION: This crosslinked copolymer is obtained by crosslinking a copolymer of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid-based monomer [e.g. (meth)acrylic acid] and 1 to 10 mol%, preferably 2 to 7 mol%, of quinone derived from a monomer component composed of a quinone (preferably at least one compound selected from the group consisting of hydroquinone, resorcinol, catechol, naphthalenediol, anthraquinol, benzoquinone, naphthoquinone and anthraquinone). This crosslinked copolymer is preferably a biodegradable, water-absorptive resin. It is produced by heating an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid-based monomer, 1 to 10 mol%, based on the whole monomer, of quinone and crosslinking agent in a water solvent in the presence of an initiator.
